The first step toward a job in health care is to find an accredited program.
More than a dozen schools in Oklahoma offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health care administration as well doctorates in public health. Bachelor’s degree programs generally take four years to finish. Graduate programs requiring 40 to 50 credits can be finished in two years or less.
Most entry level administration positions require at least a bachelor’s degree.

In Oklahoma, a license is required for administrators working in residential care agencies, long-term care nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult day care. Continuing education credits are required each year; requirements vary depending on the type of license.
Many facilities prefer or require their administrator to hold a registered nurse’s license, which is a separate license.
Certification for other administrators, though optional, is offered by the American College of Health Care Administrators, Professional Association of Health Care Office Management and the Health Care Administrators Association.
